Wide Plank Porches - a Review

All families have a plank or two that can creak under the weight of relationship stresses, and the characters in Wide Plank Porches, the latest work from Laura Frances provide a fantastic image of just that. I read this novel in one night because I simply could not put. it. down.

As a California girl with Southern roots, it was fascinating to read about one family’s desperate attempts to protect their image. In my urban city today, one daughter’s dilemma does not bear the stigma it seems to have in this Southern town. While it was refreshing to know that somewhere in this world, values that have been considered antiquated are still upheld, my heart grieved for a young girl’s shame and lack of support from those who claimed to love her, especially her mom.

Motherless daughters everywhere will identify with this novel in some regard, and those of us who have served as the “face of the family,” might understand one sister’s bizarre, arrogant, and even downright cruel behavior. Even if you don’t consider yourself a member of either of these categories, you will love Wide Plank Porches. Sit a while, sip some iced tea, and get lost in the dramatic story of the Parker family.
